Floral Mash-up Mini-Dress

After mashing Carlie’s Dolman with the Girl’s Capsule Skirt a couple weeks ago, I couldn’t wait to try it out for myself using Kymy’s Dolman Top and the Women’s Capsule Skirt! So I decided to kill two birds with one stone and make it with the rest of the floral from last week‘s ‘Get Moving’ Leggings. It worked out beautifully! (Told ya not to be surprised to see this floral again soon! lol)

I cropped 13.5 inches off the bottom of my view D dolman pattern so that the waistline seam would hit closer to my natural waist for a more flattering silhouette. I also knew that shortening the bodice would result in more of a mini-dress to wear with leggings rather than making a knee-length dress.

The only difference I ran into during constructing mine is that the waistline of my skirt was quite a bit smaller than the bottom of my dolman top. I wanted to prevent having a stretched out, wavy seam when I attached the skirt so I added elastic into the seamline to pull it in. I first sewed the ends of the elastic to form a circle slightly bigger than my waist and then layered it between the bodice and skirt when I sewed them with right sides together. The bonus of this exposed elastic method is that the 1.5 inch wide black elastic I used acts as a faux belt to accentuate my waist.

It was 70* yesterday so I got out my sandals and wore my new mini-dress yesterday with my knee-length ‘Get Moving’ Leggings to go get pedicures with my sister. I got complimented several times and loved being so comfortable while still looking stylish!

If anyone tries out the dolman-capsule mash, I’d love to see you share it in the EYMM Facebook group or on the Facebook page.

Happy Sewing!!  ~  Joelle

Thanks for the compliments. I love how easy it is to wear without having a separate belt shifting around!

  5. […] love having a “faux belt” elastic waistband on my dolman-capsule mash-up. It makes being stylish one step easier since I don’t have to mess with putting a real belt […]
