Swingy California “Tank Top” Version

I’ve been busy enjoying my best friend visiting me from the East Coast this week. Despite having almost twice as many kids in the house (she brought her 4 to play with my 5), we did manage to get a few things sewn up. One of them was a tank top made from the Girl’s California Dress & Peplum pattern.

Her middle daughter won’t wear any clothing she deems too tight-fitting. Luckily, she was a big fan of the California Dress tank top that I made her last summer. So this week we dug out some silky feeling wild animal print jersey and I whipped her up a new one!

I love how versatile this pattern is with its multiple length cutting lines and two different bodices that can be used interchangeably for the front and/or back. For this tank top, I used the scoop neck bodice on both front and back. I also attached the neck and arm binding like a t-shirt neckline is done rather than folding it around the seam allowance and to the inside. I think it gives the California a bit more casual look and is a little quicker to attach this way.

I made her top a size bigger than she measures just to be certain it wouldn’t be too tight for her liking and I left out the elastic waistline for the same reason. I must’ve done well because she loves it!

Well, I’m off to enjoy their last day here before they head home!

Happy Sewing!!  ~  Joelle

This looks fun. I made a swingy tank top like this many years ago in a cotton material but cut it on the cross grain. It turned out so fun. Your picture reminded me of this and I think I may try it again. Thank you for sharing.
