Four Seasons Cardigan for Cooler Weather

As the weather is getting colder, I thought it was high time to sew up a few layering pieces. First up is the Four Seasons Cardigan & Duster!

This time around, I chose to sew the hooded cardigan length version with long sleeves. I used a striped cotton jersey with 2-way stretch. It’s really lightweight, so it drapes beautifully down the front.

Because the fabric was so light, I was nervous to hem it because I didn’t want the wavy look of a lettuce-edge rolled hem. I used Dritz WashAway Wonder Tape to help me get a nice narrow hem around the edges. This was my first time using it and I don’t know why I’ve never tried it before! It’s basically 1/4 inch wide double sided tape that won’t gum up your needle and dissolves in the wash. I stuck it down right on the raw edge and folded it up once, pressing well with my fingers. Then I took the cardi to my machine and folded the tape/edge over again as I sewed the hem. No measuring, no pinning, no mess! It made hemming a breeze!

I’m not normally a hood-wearer (I’m never sure where my long hair should go, lol) and, honestly, I probably won’t wear this one much … but I wanted to show how the drapey front still looks great with the hood up. Also, the last time I made the Four Seasons I chose the no-hood option and almost felt like it was too wide of a neckline. The extra bulk of the hood around my neck solves that issue and so I plan to make more hooded versions in the future.

I wanted to try the duster length this time around, but didn’t quite have enough of this fabric on hand. The cardigan length is great though, because the drapey front still hides my mom fluff and the back is short enough to not get sat on.

I’ve got plans to make a duster length Four Seasons to wear with ‘Get Moving’ Leggings this fall and I also am working out the details of a zipper hack for the Four Seasons! Stay tuned!!

Happy Sewing!!  ~  Joelle
