New Look 6688 Toddler Dress Pattern Review

posted in: Pattern Reviews, Sewing | 14

So I have decided that I am going to try to review some of the patterns that I make! So here is my first pattern review.

Pattern Description:
New Look 6678 Easy Kids! pattern for a toddler’s dresses.

Pattern Sizing:
I know that their patterns run big… I went by the measurements of my girls… & made the 1/2 size… I used the proper seam allowences & it came out WAY to big. I figured it would be longer because of the mods that I made to the hem & the tulle, but the top of it is way to big. It fits my 2 year old son that measurements match the size 2 dress!!! It doesn’t bother me that they run big, but it does bother me that even if you use the measurements they use as sizing its STILL to big.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
I did make alterations, but it still looked very simular, I am very please with the look of the dresses! I made 4 total so far… 2 different prints for my twins… What do you think?

Were the instructions easy to follow?

They were okay…. they pictures aren’t very detailed… & they are rushed so lots of little basic things are left out. My biggest beef with it is they zipper installtion part is HORRIBLE!!! Not something I would recomment to someone that hasn’t sewn before.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?

I LOVE the style of the dresses, & they are easy to mix & match the tops with the skirt & different types of trim. I didn’t like the zipper that they had put in, it makes it a little bit of a challenge to get it on & off if it fits properly. In the future I will be putting an invisible zipper in that goes all the way to the arm pit.

Fabric Used:

I used solid colored muslin & cotton for the lining. For the main dress I used cute woven cottons!

Pattern Alterations or any design changes you made:

I made a few changes!!! I dropped the extra trim on the neck area, & I made my ribbon tie a sash instead of sewing it in. I also did a rolled hem instead of a traditional hem… & on the under skirt I used tulle for the extra body & I used a wider section… 8-6″ is best, & then I allowed it to hang 3″ past the edge of the under dress. I also tore the zipper set up apart after the rest of it was finished, & I put an invisible zipper in instead that goes alway to the bottom of the arm opening.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?

I will be using the pattern peices to make many more dresses, though I will put them together my own way. I would recommend it too people that have put in at least a few zippers.

Conclusion:

I LOVE the dresses that I ended up with. Totally worth the $3.44 plus tax that I paid for it at Wal-mart! I didn’t cut the tissue pattern, traces it onto parchment tracing paper instead, so it will last me many years!

I love your blog! I have twins, boy/girl… they will be two in May. I just got Toddler beds for them, and the cost of sheets are eye opening! I’m sure you know babies make messes, so I wash pretty much everyday! I LOVE the tutorial for the crib/toddler bed sheet…I can’t wait to try it. Do you happen to have one for the flat sheet? What about a comforter? I love the twirly dresses, I think I’m going to try to find this pattern to make for my daughter’s birthday dress!

Thanks for taking the time to post this information for others to try! I certainly appreicate it!!

I’m loking for a 5T size pattern for a “peasant dress” … Wal Mart used to sell a Faded Glory product that was a dress made in four sections with off white for the top layer (neckline, sleeveless, and bodice); a bright light pink ruffled section; under it was a hot pink more ruffles section; and the bottom section was a medium pick. So the dress has four horizontal sections in four different colors.
It buttoned down the back with small plain white buttons.
“No decoration” it said on the tag.

We have several Mother’s wanting them for their little girls this Spring. My grand daughter has one they bought at Walmart.
    Every body just loves it.

Shirley I don’t know of a pattern off hand BUT I know of another awesome tutorial blog that has a peasant top tutorial & a tiered twirl skirt tutorial that could be put together to make just the dress you are looking for! Just make the shirt shorter to be a bodice & gather your skirt & attach!

What gorgeous dresses – and you’ve made 4. Ive just blogged about the one I made and am trying to find out if the larger sizes come up big too (my 6 month version came up massive!).

I agree with the zipper comment – although I bought a longer zipper and inserted it from right under the arm all the way down – which i thought was more practical for getting a child in and out of anyway!

If you want to have a look at mine it’s on my kate corrie sewing blog here You can check out my nautical version of new look 6688 on my kate corrie sewing blog at

I have made bigger sizes and had the same issue. I recommend comparing something the size you want to the back bodice piece and pick sizing based on that. Do remember to take the seam allowance in account.

With the added length from the tulle the twins wore them 6m size until they were in a solid 3/4
